Birmingham-based artist, Sam Weeks, has strong ties to Malvern, having visited regularly for over thirty years, to walk on the Hills and visit friends. So, she’s absolutely delighted to be bringing her new solo exhibition, ‘Harmony & Chaos’, to the Book & Cup Café, in Malvern’s popular library.
The exhibition will run from 1st to 29th August, showcasing a powerful collection of Weeks’ vibrant, original abstract paintings, created over the past two years. The works on display explore mindfulness & movement, order & disorder, and the interplay of intuition & logic. Expect colourful abstract paintings, rich with narrative, pattern, handwritten text, nature motifs and geometric shapes. Weeks’ artwork will take you on an engaging journey into the unknown.
Sam Weeks is a contemporary abstract painter, based in Birmingham. Her recognisable style of painting embraces the chaos and unpredictability of drips and sanded surfaces, contrasting it with 1970s inspired patterns, geometric forms and nature motifs. Weeks works instinctively and intuitively, finding inspiration by following what she terms “the trail of breadcrumbs into the unknown.” Always playing with her materials and exploring new ways of working, Weeks paints in pursuit of an elusive ‘flow state’, the results of which are evident in the surface and symbolism of her many-layered paintings. This is unashamedly bright, highly visually textured abstract artwork - a reflection of the inner push and pull of the opposing forces at play in our thinking; a visual testimony to Weeks’ search for inner balance, somewhere between the influences of instinct and intellect.
Harmony & Chaos marks an exciting moment in Weeks’ art career – she was recently named as one of ‘10 Rising Birmingham Artists to Watch’ by acclaimed art writer and curator Ruth Millington.
