Sam Weeks is a British abstract artist, based in Birmingham, UK.
She studied Fine Art at BCU.
Sam finds her creative inspiration by 'noticing what I notice' and following an unpredictable trail of breadcrumbs into the unknown, wherever it leads, trusting it will uncover new, intriguing subjects to investigate.
Sam paints instinctively, riffing on a theme, idea or feeling, without any pre-planning or fixed outcome in mind - her creative enquiry is more about the journey than the destination.
Chance, serendipity, and finding a flow state, somewhere between the influences of head and heart, intellect and instinct, are key in Sam's painting process and practice.
She hopes you'll join her on the journey.
For me, everything starts with play - being free with the paint, seeing what comes to mind - an association, a response, the glimpse of an idea or theme.
I use brushes, scrapers, scratching implements, rollers, a detail sander, even cutlery! Anything I can find that will apply or remove paint is fair game. I always have a stack of gel-printed papers on hand to incorporate, adding layers of texture and history to the surface, as I go.
My preferred medium is acrylic paint, for its immediacy and compatibility with so many other media.
My studio, a wooden shed at the end of my garden, is my sanctuary, my laboratory, my soul's true home.
In there. with my music or the radio on, I commit fully to expressing my innermost thoughts and ideas with paint. For me, Art is all about communication - it has a story or poem to tell, each painting a new paragraph or stanza - each series a new chapter.
Like a trail of footprints in the sand, my paintings are testament to my journey and exploration.
Sam Weeks is a contemporary abstract painter, based in Birmingham. Her recognisable style of painting embraces the chaos and unpredictability of drips and sanded surfaces, contrasting it with 1970s inspired patterns, geometric forms and nature motifs.
Weeks works intuitively, finding inspiration by following what she terms “the trail of breadcrumbs into the unknown.” Always playing with her materials and exploring new ways of working, Weeks paints in pursuit of an elusive ‘flow state’, the results of which are evident in the surface and symbolism of her many-layered paintings.
This is unashamedly bright, highly visually textured abstract artwork - a reflection of the inner push and pull of the opposing forces at play in our thinking; a visual testimony to Weeks’ search for inner balance, somewhere between the influences of instinct and intellect.
Weeks' 2025 exhibition titled Harmony & Chaos marked an exciting moment in Weeks’ art career as it came shortly after she was named as one of ‘10 Rising Birmingham Artists to Watch’ by acclaimed art writer and curator Ruth Millington.
